Here is a piece of concept art from the game Warhammer 40K Space Marine, the character itself is known as a Psyker, a powerful sorcerer known for corruption and mentally unstable. Since the theme of the game is grim, dark future. The artist must have designed this concept art to fit those two themes, displaying spikes, corruption, skulls etc. As you can see there are three different concepts of the Psyker, as during the concept phase for creating the game, the artist must have gone through several more concept pieces for this one model. Colouring for the piece seems to be dark and gloomy, displaying none of the primary colours as this could indicate that this game isn't for younger users. Since this is character concept art, there isn't need for a foreground or background since the main focus of the concept piece is the character itself, showing different variations of them. We can also see the different textures and materials of each piece as they're generally the same and compose of, dead flesh, rusted metal, bone, leather, organic ooze and blood from stitches. Looking at the materials, we can see that this is made to look deadly, battle worn and weird/corrupted.
For each concept there are different lighting, the first one seems to be facing the front of the model as you can see on the chest as this is the brightest point on the model. The light doesn't seem to be that strong on this piece as only two main parts of his body seems to be lit up brightly, the head and chest and some of the shoulders. possible reason as to why the artist chose the light up the chest and head is to possible show the key features of the Psyker, this could tie in with the eye entry point as the first thing I notice is his chest as this is the brightest point in the art piece. Back to lighting, personally I think it's artificial light with it being a spot light aimed at his chest, since we can still see other parts of his body, there are other object reflecting the light off each other to brighten the other parts of his body. we can also see minor lighting parts from the spot light on his right arm, belt, and the two skulls on his back pack. There is other artificial lighting in the art piece, such as the green light coming off from what appears to be his belt. We know that this is artificial lighting as it's giving off a luminescence rather than lighting up the whole room, plus his best seems to be mechanical, showing that is possibly a light in his belt. the last piece of lighting on this concept piece is the blue light at the bottom of his feet, going by my knowledge of the Warhammer World, this is a magical aura round the Psyker' feet which is giving him the ability to fly. Since this isn't mechanical like the belt, but instead magical, is would believe this is natural light as the Psyker is the one causing the lighting to take place at the bottom of his feet.
The middle concept art piece resembles a lot of similarities to the first concept piece, although there are slight cosmetic changes. For the lighting it is clear that the light source is coming from the top left side of the image as you can see the left side of the characters chest and arm is lit up, along with the the left side of the head and part of his back pack, while on the other side it's very dark and is hard to make out parts of his arm. Again just like the previous model, I think this lighting is artificial rather than natural. Another artificial light in this concept model is from the characters eyes. These glow green, slightly lighting up the metal mask part around the eye. The green glow itself isn't intense therefore isn't lighting up the majority of the characters face. We do see another green 'light' coming from the characters belt, looking closely at the best we can see that it isn't a light but in fact a jar of some sort, feeding into the characters side. Since we can see into the jar but all the way through the other side, this is translucent as we're able to see whats inside the jar but hardly through the other side of the jar. My eye entry point would go straight to the characters eyes, as this contrasts with the rest of the body. The body seems to be dark in tone but the eye really stands out against everything else. a difference with this concept piece is that there isn't a blue aura round his feet, showing that every concept art piece for a character need to be different from the last.
Finally we have the last piece, like previously the only difference between these models are only cosmetic, but do change the lighting in some areas. Straight away we notice that there are no green artificial lights in this piece as said previously, each piece needs to be different from the last. Also, we notice that isn't one isn't flying or have any scaring on the body. This could indicate that this is a brand new Psyker while the other two models could be hardy veterans and this is what they look like before war. We also notice that this one doesn't have a mask so we can see the features of a Psyker' face and head. We also see a green piece of glass in one of the eyes, this could a concept design from the previous two, as they had glowing green eyes. The lighting in this piece seems to be coming from the front of the piece as we can clearly see the reflecting light coming from the metal parts of the body, along with the eye and finally the skin. Again this is probably artificial lighting as said previously in the other two pieces. The pose of this piece seems to be more relaxed than the previous two as we can see by the hands are in a more relaxed position rather than in a more attacking position like the others.
